My Adventure Tri

Emily Ackner

We don’t receive wisdom we must discover it after a journey that no one can take for us
— Marcel Proust

This year, I decided that my next challenge would involve getting on a bike. Discovering that my impressive housemate and team were cycling from London-Athens (in aid of Help Refugees), I wanted in on the fun, so decided to join them for a week through Croatia. Simultaneously working for The North Face, we had signed ourselves up for an Italian mountain race two weeks later. There was a time gap to fill... I'd always fancied an island-hopping swim in Croatia.

The goal: make a movement puzzle and piece it together, a bespoke challenge to encourage struggle, sweat, growth and of course fun.' My Adventure Tri' slowly came together. A planned endurance exploration and self-powered adventure. Proust suggests there are lessons to be learned on the road travelled... I concur. So on the 11th June I’ll jump on my bike in Trieste, Italy to start my own journey.

What is My Adventure Tri?

THE CAUSE

Behind every good challenge is a better cause. I've spoken about my need for a strong 'why' before I sign up or commit to a big physical challenge. It gives me focus and drives me forward with more passion and enthusiasm. I have the luxury of choice to make this journey, I'm not in danger, I have a home to return to.

All donations made will be going towards supporting a community centre and cooperative in Athens, Khora, who proactively provide respite for some of the 57,000 refugees caught in limbo since the 2016 Macedonian border closure.

Their centre now provides not only basic needs such as free nutritious food, warm clothing and dental care, but also social needs such as education, child care, access to information and a safe space to build relationships and relax.

You can follow my journey on Instagram and Facebook and support me by making a kind donation to Help Refugees at My Donate page. Anything big or small is gratefully appreciated!
